Colletes piruvicus is a species of ground-nesting bees belonging to the family Colletidae, order Hymenoptera. While members of the genus are often recognized as beneficial pollinators, this specific species can cause localized damage in agricultural systems when their nesting activities conflict with the root zones of sensitive crops in loose or sandy soil environments.

This pest primarily impacts young nursery stock and field crops. By excavating complex nest galleries, the bees disturb the soil structure directly around the root systems. This mechanical disruption can sever small feeder roots, leading to physiological stress in the plants and potentially stunted development, especially during the crucial early growth stages.

The biology of Colletes piruvicus involves a well-defined seasonal cycle. Females select suitable soil patches, which they line with a cellophane-like secretion to protect their larvae from environmental fluctuations. Larvae feed on pollen-nectar provisions prepared by the female before pupating. The adults emerge in a synchronized fashion, usually correlated with the phenology of their preferred floral resources.

Damage is characterized by the presence of numerous small circular holes in the ground and disturbed surface soil. The economic harm is cumulative: as the number of nesting tunnels increases, the overall soil integrity decreases, causing moisture loss around the roots and hindering the plant's ability to uptake nutrients effectively, leading to visible chlorosis or wilting in affected patches.

Integrated pest management strategies focus on habitat disruption. Frequent tilling or deep cultivation of the soil during the nesting season effectively destroys colony sites and forces relocation. Additionally, increasing soil density through rolling or maintaining proper soil moisture levels renders the substrate less attractive to females, thereby reducing the intensity of the infestation in agricultural fields.
