Description

The litchi erinose mite (Colomerus novahabridensis) is a microscopic pest classified within the Eriophyidae family, order Trombidiformes. It is a highly host-specific organism that targets Litchi chinensis, causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to the tree's foliage and inflorescences.

The biology of this mite is characterized by a high reproductive rate during the vegetative growth stages of the litchi tree. Females overwinter in dormant buds or crevices of the bark, emerging when new growth begins. Given the short life cycle, the population can rapidly expand across the canopy under favorable warm and humid conditions.

The characteristic damage is the development of erineum, which is a dense, velvet-like patch of abnormal plant hair growth on the underside of leaves. These patches are initially white or yellowish but turn dark brown as the season progresses. These deformations provide a protected habitat for the mites to feed and reproduce.

The pest causes economic losses by reducing the total photosynthetic area and damaging flowering tissues, which leads to poor fruit set. In severe cases, constant infestation can weaken the tree, leading to stunted growth, leaf senescence, and overall diminished orchard productivity over time.

Effective management requires a proactive approach including:

  • Regular monitoring of new flushes during the early stages of growth.
  • Pruning and destruction of infested branches to curb initial outbreaks.
  • Application of specialized miticides or sulfur-based treatments during the dormant or early growth periods to suppress population growth.
