Description
Systematic position. The Pandora moth (Coloradia pandora) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Saturniidae. It is a large nocturnal moth native to the western regions of North America, recognized for its periodic outbreaks in coniferous forests.
Host plants. The primary hosts for the larvae of this species are various pine species. It specifically targets Jeffrey pine, lodgepole pine, and ponderosa pine. During peak infestation years, the caterpillars can strip entire forest stands of their foliage.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle typically spans one to two years. Adult moths emerge in the summer to mate and lay eggs on pine needles. The larvae hatch and feed on needles until late summer, eventually dropping to the forest floor to pupate in the soil, where they may remain in a diapause state for one or more years.
Damage and economic impact. The larvae cause significant defoliation by consuming pine needles. While the trees can often withstand a single year of defoliation, repeated cycles lead to severe tree stress, reduced radial growth, and increased susceptibility to bark beetles, often resulting in widespread timber loss.
Management strategies. Control measures primarily focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key strategies include population monitoring using pheromone traps and the application of biological pesticides like Bacillus thuringiensis during early larval stages. Proper forest thinning and encouraging natural predators also help keep populations in check.
