Stock dove

The stock dove (Columba oenas) is a wild pigeon species that can occasionally act as an agricultural pest. Belonging to the order Columbiformes and the family Columbidae, this bird typically inhabits woodland areas. However, its behavioral patterns lead it to forage in agricultural landscapes, where it can cause localized but significant damage to various crops, especially when nesting sites are situated near arable land.

These birds primarily target cereal crops, including winter wheat and barley, as well as legumes and sunflower seeds. During the sowing period, stock doves are notorious for digging up and consuming seeds from the soil surface, resulting in poor germination rates and patchy crop establishment. As crops mature, foraging flocks can cause direct loss of yield by feeding on the grain in the ear or flower heads.

The biology of the stock dove involves a high degree of social interaction during foraging, with birds congregating in large flocks to maximize efficiency. Their life cycle is marked by early breeding, which often aligns with the critical early growth stages of spring crops. Their agility and ability to cover long distances between roosting and feeding sites make them a persistent challenge for farmers in affected regions.

The damage caused by stock doves is twofold: direct consumption of the potential harvest and mechanical damage through trampling. Areas of high activity often show significant thinning of crop stands. If not monitored, the cumulative impact of these birds can lead to decreased agricultural output and may necessitate costly replanting or emergency pest management measures to salvage the crop.

Effective management strategies focus on deterrence rather than eradication, as many populations are protected by environmental regulations. Common practices include:
