Compsidia

Compsidia is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae. These insects are classified as wood-boring pests (xylophages) due to their larvae's feeding habits, which occur exclusively within the woody tissues of their host plants. As members of the Lamiinae subfamily, they play a significant role in the biological degradation of wood.

These pests primarily target various broad-leaved tree species, often causing distress to both orchards and forest ecosystems. The presence of these beetles can be particularly detrimental to young or stressed trees, which lack the sap flow pressure necessary to potentially drown the larvae or repel the female when attempting to oviposit.

The biology of Compsidia follows a typical life cycle for wood-boring beetles. The adult females lay eggs in bark crevices, and the emerging larvae bore into the tree to create tunnels. The larval stage is long-lasting, as it serves as the primary growth period. After pupation within the host plant, the adult emerges through an exit hole to begin the reproductive cycle anew.

The damage caused by Compsidia is significant and often irreversible. By constructing larval galleries, the insects disrupt the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients throughout the tree. Visible symptoms include dieback of branches, exit holes in the bark, and the presence of frass (sawdust-like material) ejected from the tunnels.

Effective management against Compsidia requires a multi-faceted approach:

• Regular monitoring of tree health to detect early infestations.
• Sanitary pruning to remove and destroy infested wood.
• Use of systemic insecticides injected into the trunk or applied during adult emergence.
• Maintaining high tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation.
• Promoting biodiversity in the area to support natural predators that feed on larvae or adults.
