Systematic position: The southern click beetle (Conoderus australasiae) is a member of the Coleoptera order, belonging to the Elateridae family. This species is recognized as a significant soil-dwelling pest, primarily known for its larvae, commonly referred to as wireworms, which cause severe economic losses in agriculture.

Crops affected: The pest exhibits a broad host range, attacking the root systems and underground stems of numerous cultivated plants. Key crops susceptible to damage include potatoes, maize, tomatoes, sugar beet, and various cereals. High larval populations in the soil often result in significant stand reduction and compromised crop vigor.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles deposit eggs into the soil, usually near host vegetation. Upon hatching, the wireworms spend several years developing in the soil. They are highly adaptable to environmental changes, moving through soil strata to seek optimal moisture and temperature conditions for their growth.

Nature of damage and impact: Wireworms cause damage by feeding on roots, tubers, and seeds. The tunneling activity within potatoes and other root vegetables significantly degrades produce quality and creates entry points for various soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary rot. In seedling crops, wireworms sever roots, frequently resulting in wilting and total plant failure.
