Parallel wireworm

Conoderus parallelus

Description

Conoderus parallelus is a species of click beetle belonging to the family Elateridae. As an agricultural pest, it is primarily recognized for its larval stage, commonly referred to as a wireworm. These larvae inhabit the soil profile, where they feed on the underground portions of various plant species, posing a significant threat to global agricultural productivity.

The pest has a broad host range, showing a strong preference for root and tuber crops. Major agricultural commodities such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and various cereal grains are frequently attacked. The damage caused by these larvae can lead to substantial yield losses, particularly in regions where soil moisture and temperature conditions are optimal for their development.

The life cycle of the beetle involves an egg-laying phase in the soil, followed by several larval instars. The larval stage is notably long, often extending over several years, which allows the population to persist in fields even under rotational crop systems. Adult beetles typically emerge in late spring or summer, feeding on foliage, though their impact is far less severe than that of the subterranean larvae.

Wireworm damage is characterized by internal tunneling and girdling of roots, tubers, and basal stems. This feeding activity not only physically compromises the plant's structural integrity and nutrient uptake but also facilitates secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens. In cases of high larval density, farmers may observe patchy emergence, wilting, and total plant death in affected areas.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Control strategies focus on both cultural practices and chemical interventions to suppress soil populations.

  • Implementing crop rotations that discourage larval survival.
  • Utilizing soil-applied granular insecticides during planting.
  • Applying seed treatments to protect young plants during critical early stages.
  • Managing soil pH through liming, as wireworms favor acidic environments.
