Primary hosts include corn, sugarcane, potatoes, tobacco, sweet potatoes, and various small grains. The larvae thrive by feeding on the subsurface parts of these plants, often leading to reduced stand density and substantial yield losses.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. They can spend several years in the soil, moving vertically in response to moisture and temperature fluctuations.
