Description

The four-banded conopid (Conops quadrifasciata) is a dipteran insect belonging to the family Conopidae. Characterized by its wasp-like appearance and distinctive yellow and black abdominal bands, it is a specialized parasitoid that mimics stinging hymenopterans to navigate environments while avoiding predation.

The biology of this species is intrinsically linked to its host, typically bees and, most notably, bumblebees (Bombus spp.). Adult conopids are frequently observed feeding on nectar from a variety of flowers, making them a common sight in meadows and agricultural fields during the peak summer months.

The reproductive strategy of Conops quadrifasciata involves attacking the host in mid-air. The female inserts an egg into the abdomen of a bumblebee. Once inside, the larva develops by consuming the bee's internal tissues. This process eventually leads to the death of the bumblebee host, within which the larva pupates and eventually emerges as an adult fly.

From an agronomical perspective, the damage caused by this insect is classified as an indirect loss. Since bumblebees are critical pollinators for many high-value crops like tomatoes, peppers, and various legumes, the parasitism of these bees directly threatens pollination efficacy, potentially resulting in reduced fruit set and lower harvest quality.
