These flies exhibit Batesian mimicry, resembling wasps or bees, which serves as a defense mechanism. They are frequently found in meadows and agricultural fields, foraging on flowers for nectar.

The biological cycle of this species is characterized by obligate parasitism. Unlike many other flies, Sicus ferrugineus specializes in attacking Hymenoptera, particularly bumblebees (Bombus species). The female fly catches the bee in mid-air and oviposits an egg into the abdomen, where the larva hatches and begins to feed on the host's internal tissues.
