Description
Systematic position of the genus Myopa belongs to the order Diptera, family Conopidae. These insects are commonly known as thick-headed flies due to their distinctively enlarged, globular heads and large eyes which aid them in identifying potential hosts during flight.
These flies are known as parasitoids rather than typical agricultural pests that consume vegetation. They target beneficial pollinators, specifically honey bees and bumblebees. By attacking these insects, they indirectly threaten crop yields, as pollination services are crucial for agricultural productivity.
Biology and life cycle are fascinating yet destructive for the host. The adult female Myopa intercepts a foraging bee in mid-air, using a sharp ovipositor to inject an egg into the bee's abdomen. The larva then develops internally, consuming the host's body tissues until the bee dies, after which the larva pupates within the remains.
Nature of damage and harmfulness is primarily observed in the reduction of honey bee populations. An infested bee experiences behavioral changes, becomes disoriented, and eventually perishes. When a high percentage of foragers in a colony are infected, the overall productivity of the hive drops drastically, leading to significant economic losses for beekeepers.
Protection measures primarily involve preventive management of apiaries. Since chemical control is rarely an option due to the danger posed to the bees themselves, beekeepers should focus on maintaining strong, healthy colonies that are more resilient. Proper site selection for hives, away from high-density habitats of these flies, is often the most effective strategy.
