Copaxa is a genus of large moths belonging to the family Saturniidae, commonly known as giant silk moths. While primarily tropical in distribution, several species within this genus act as significant pests in forestry and ornamental gardening, where their larvae feed aggressively on the foliage of various host trees and shrubs.
Systematically, Copaxa is classified under the order Lepidoptera. The larval stage is the primary cause of concern for agronomists, as the caterpillars grow rapidly and possess a voracious appetite. Their presence is often identified by large patches of defoliated leaves, which can lead to severe stress for host plants if left unmanaged.
The damage caused by Copaxa larvae typically involves the stripping of leaf blades, often leaving only the main veins intact. In cases of high pest density, the application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis can be effective. Furthermore, promoting natural predators and maintaining tree health through proper fertilization can limit the impact of these pests.
