The Coptoformica subgenus of ants belongs to the Formicidae family and the Hymenoptera order. While many ant species are beneficial, those in the Coptoformica group are often considered minor pests in agricultural settings due to their complex and sometimes detrimental interactions with various types of vegetation and sucking insects.

These ants are known to infest a wide variety of crops, including fruit trees, berry bushes, and diverse vegetable crops. They do not directly feed on the plant tissues in a way that causes significant mechanical damage, but their presence acts as a catalyst for other pests, significantly impacting the health and productivity of the infested plants.

The biology of Coptoformica is marked by the formation of large, structured colonies. Their developmental cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They are highly efficient at nesting in the soil around root systems or near the base of woody plants, which allows them to maintain close contact with the plants they exploit for resources.

Their primary harmful effect is the protection and dispersal of aphids and scale insects. By defending these insects from natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings, the ants ensure the survival and expansion of aphid colonies. This leads to severe sap loss, leaf yellowing, stunting, and the proliferation of sooty mold on the honeydew secreted by the aphids.

Effective management strategies involve a combination of chemical and mechanical methods.

  • Using sticky barriers on tree trunks to prevent access.
  • Applying granular or gel-based insecticides that are carried back to the nest.
  • Controlling the aphid population through regular inspection.
  • Removing weed hosts that support aphid colonies throughout the season.
