Violet mite

Coptophylla violae is a highly specialized microscopic pest belonging to the Eriophyidae family, order Acariformes. Unlike spider mites, these "four-legged" mites are invisible to the naked eye, measuring only a fraction of a millimeter in length. Their slender, vermiform bodies allow them to dwell deep within the growing points of their host plants.

The primary hosts of this mite are plants of the genus Viola, particularly African violets (Saintpaulia). These mites colonize the youngest tissues, including apical buds, unopened leaves, and flower stalks. By feeding on the internal contents of plant cells, they disrupt the physiological processes of the host, leading to significant morphological changes.

The life cycle of the violet mite is characterized by rapid development through egg, larva, and nymph stages, which can be completed within a few days under warm and humid conditions. This allows populations to explode in indoor settings. They are easily spread by human handling, tools, or air currents within greenhouse environments, making them a major threat to professional and amateur growers.

Damage symptoms are distinctive and often irreversible. Infested plants exhibit stunted growth, leaves become brittle, cupped, and exhibit dense, coarse hairiness. The center of the plant often becomes tightly packed with deformed, dysfunctional foliage, a condition known as "crowning." Flowering is usually significantly reduced or completely inhibited due to the damage to the floral buds.

Effective management requires a proactive approach as the mites are resistant to many standard pesticides. Using systemic acaricides that target eriophyid mites is essential. Cultural control measures, such as isolating infested plants, practicing strict sanitation with pruning tools, and ensuring proper airflow, are crucial to preventing the widespread transmission of the pest within a collection.
