Originally native to parts of Asia, this insect has become a significant invasive pest in many agricultural regions, posing a serious threat to legumes due to its high reproductive rate and effective feeding strategies.
Affected crops: The primary host plant for this species is soybean (Glycine max). However, it exhibits a broad host range, feeding on various legumes including dry beans, peas, pigeon peas, and various ornamental leguminous plants. Its ability to thrive on both cultivated and wild hosts facilitates its rapid spread across different agricultural landscapes.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Coptosoma formosana involves the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Female bugs lay eggs in distinctive double-row clusters on leaves and stems. Depending on environmental temperatures, the population can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, often reaching peak densities during the reproductive stages of the soybean crop.
Damage and economic impact: Both adults and nymphs feed by inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissues. They typically congregate on stems, branches, and pods to suck sap. This feeding activity leads to plant wilting, stunted growth, flower and pod abortion, and reduced seed weight. In severe infestations, the quality and quantity of the harvest are drastically compromised.
