Description
Cordylobia is a genus of blowflies belonging to the family Calliphoridae, order Diptera. While they are not classified as plant pests, they are significant medical and veterinary parasites. Their presence in agricultural environments poses a severe threat to animal health and farm management, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and other tropical regions.
The biology of Cordylobia is centered on the obligate parasitic lifecycle of its larvae. Unlike many other flies, adult females lay eggs in soil contaminated with excrement or on damp surfaces. Upon contact with a host, the larvae penetrate the skin, causing a condition known as cutaneous myiasis, which is a major concern for livestock owners.
The lifecycle includes the egg stage, three larval instars, pupation, and the adult stage. The larvae feed on the host's living tissues for approximately 8 to 12 days. Once they reach maturity, they exit the host, drop to the soil, and begin the pupation phase. The environmental conditions, primarily soil moisture and temperature, dictate the speed of development and population density.
The damage caused by these pests is characterized by the formation of painful, furuncle-like lesions on the skin of livestock. Infested animals suffer from stress, loss of weight, and reduced milk or meat production. Furthermore, the site of the lesion is prone to secondary bacterial infections, which can result in severe health complications if not properly managed.
Control measures and protection strategies focus on sanitation and environment modification:
- Rigorous cleaning of animal housing to remove organic waste and prevent egg-laying.
- Implementing effective manure management systems to break the fly's lifecycle.
- Applying suitable insect repellents on animals to reduce the risk of infestation.
- Treating soil in resting areas with insecticides where high levels of pupae are suspected.
