Cordylobia anthropophaga, commonly known as the Tumbu fly, belongs to the family Calliphoridae within the order Diptera. It is essential to note that this organism is not an agricultural pest in the sense of damaging crops, but rather a significant medical and veterinary parasite that affects mammals, including humans.
The biology of this species is centered around its parasitic life cycle. Unlike phytophagous insects that consume plant tissues, Cordylobia anthropophaga relies on the subcutaneous tissues of a host to complete its larval development. The fly is primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa, thriving in warm and humid environments.
The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult flies lay eggs on soil contaminated with fecal matter or on clothes left out to dry. Upon contact with a host, the larvae penetrate the skin, causing furuncular myiasis. After 8 to 12 days of feeding within the host's tissue, the larvae emerge and drop to the ground to pupate in the soil.
