Cordylomera spinicornis

Cordylomera spinicornis

Description

Cordylomera spinicornis is a species of longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae) known for its role as a significant wood-boring pest. Originating primarily in tropical Africa, this beetle causes substantial economic damage by infesting both standing trees and harvested timber, making it a subject of concern for forest health and international trade.

The beetle primarily targets tree species within the Meliaceae family, including the economically valuable African mahogany (Khaya species). While it often selects weakened or stressed trees, heavy infestations can compromise the structural integrity and health of mature, otherwise healthy trees, leading to stunted growth or eventual death.

The biological cycle is dominated by the larval stage, which develops inside the wood. Adult females deposit eggs in bark crevices or surface wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries. These larvae feed and grow within the host tree for an extended period before pupating and emerging as adult beetles.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily characterized by internal wood galleries packed with frass (wood dust). Externally, infestation is indicated by larval exit holes, bark scaling, and the exudation of resin or sap. This tunneling activity significantly reduces the timber's quality, making it unfit for high-value carpentry or construction and facilitating the entry of decay-causing fungi.

  • Conduct regular forest health monitoring to detect early signs of larval tunneling.
  • Implement strict sanitation measures, including the removal and destruction of infested logs.
  • Apply chemical treatments or protective coatings to high-value saplings in nurseries.
  • Ensure timber export compliance through professional heat treatment or kiln drying to kill larvae.
