Inflated click beetle

The inflated click beetle (Corymbites inflatus) belongs to the Elateridae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized in agriculture as a soil-dwelling pest. Its larvae, commonly known as wireworms, are notorious for causing significant economic damage to various agricultural field crops across different regions.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including small grains, corn, sunflowers, sugar beets, and various vegetable crops. The most critical period of damage occurs during seed germination and the early vegetative stage, where the larvae feed on seeds, embryonic roots, and underground stems, leading to severe stand thinning.

The biology of the inflated click beetle involves a multi-year life cycle spent primarily in the soil. Female beetles lay eggs in moist, organic-rich substrates. The larvae pass through several molts over a period of years, showing high mobility in the soil profile depending on moisture levels and temperature, which makes their population management quite challenging.

The damage is primarily caused by larvae burrowing into seeds and roots, disrupting nutrient uptake and water transport in the plant. Furthermore, these mechanical injuries create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary infections such as fungal rots, which often exacerbate the initial damage caused by the insect feeding.
