Corythucha passiflorae, commonly known as the passion vine lace bug, belongs to the Tingidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by their unique, lace-like thoracic expansions and wing covers, which provide effective camouflage. They are considered a significant pest for plants belonging to the Passiflora genus.

The host range is primarily limited to various species of Passiflora, including commercial crops like passion fruit. These bugs thrive in warm environments, gathering in dense colonies on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves. This behavior makes early detection challenging for farmers, as the upper surface may show only minor signs of infestation until the damage becomes severe.

The biology of Corythucha passiflorae is adapted to the growth cycles of their host plants. Eggs are laid in clusters, and the developing nymphs remain gregarious, feeding on the same leaves throughout their immature stages. Because their life cycle is temperature-dependent, populations can expand rapidly during prolonged warm, dry spells, leading to multiple overlapping generations throughout the year.

Damage is primarily caused by the piercing-sucking mouthparts of both nymphs and adults. As they feed on the cell sap, they inject saliva that causes localized chlorosis. On the upper leaf surface, this manifests as fine white or yellowish stippling. Over time, heavy infestations cause leaves to turn brown, wither, and abscise, leading to stunted plant growth and reduced fruit yield.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Corythucha passiflorae. Key strategies include constant monitoring of the undersides of leaves and the removal of heavily infested plant parts. If chemical intervention is necessary, systemic or contact insecticides registered for use on fruit-bearing vines should be applied, ensuring thorough coverage of the leaf undersides where the pests reside.
