Cosmoglyphus krameri
Cosmoglyphus krameri
Description
Cosmoglyphus krameri is a microscopic acarid mite belonging to the Acaridae family within the order Sarcoptiformes. These mites are commonly found in soils, compost, and greenhouse environments. Due to their minute size and preference for decaying organic matter, they often go unnoticed until significant population outbreaks occur.
The pest primarily targets bulbous plants, root vegetables, and various ornamental crops grown in greenhouses or fields. It causes severe damage to garlic, onions, tulips, and potatoes, particularly during storage. The mites penetrate the plant tissue through existing lesions or mechanical injuries, seeking out moisture-rich environments to feed and reproduce.
The biology of Cosmoglyphus krameri is highly adapted to humid conditions. The life cycle comprises several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (often in the dispersal hypopus phase), tritonymph, and adult. The hypopus stage is particularly significant for pest dispersal, as it allows the mites to attach to mobile insects, facilitating movement between plants and across storage facilities.
The damage caused by these mites results in tissue degradation and subsequent rotting. As they feed, the mites macerate the plant cells, creating cavities that become centers for decay. The affected plant parts soften, turn brown, and emit a foul odor, which often masks the actual presence of the mites, making identification difficult without microscopic inspection.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the risk of infestation:
- Implementing strict crop rotation and soil sterilization practices.
- Ensuring proper ventilation and low humidity levels during post-harvest storage.
- Removing and destroying all infested bulbs or crop debris to eliminate reservoirs.
- Regular inspection of planting material for early signs of mite activity.
- Application of targeted acaricides when pest thresholds are exceeded.
