Criconema is a genus of phytoparasitic nematodes belonging to the family Criconematidae within the order Tylenchida. These microscopic worms act as obligate ectoparasites, typically leading a sedentary lifestyle while feeding on the surface of plant roots using their robust stylets.

These nematodes exhibit a broad host range, impacting various agricultural and ornamental crops. Significant economic damage is often observed in fruit trees, berry bushes (including grapes and strawberries), as well as certain vegetable crops and perennials grown in sandy or loamy soils.

The life cycle of Criconema consists of an egg stage followed by four larval stages, each culminating in a molt. Females are characterized by a distinct ringed body, often featuring cuticular outgrowths that assist in anchorage within the soil substrate. Reproduction occurs in the soil or the rhizosphere, with population densities increasing gradually due to their relatively low fecundity rate.
