Ring nematode
Criconemella parva
Description
Systematic position. The ring nematode (Criconemella parva) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and the family Criconematidae. These are small ectoparasitic nematodes widely distributed in various soil types, specializing in feeding on the roots of woody and perennial plants.
Host crops. This species acts as a polyphage, causing significant economic damage to fruit crops. Affected plants include stone and pome fruits such as apples, peaches, plums, and cherries, as well as vineyards and ornamental nursery stock. They are particularly detrimental in long-term orchards where nematode populations can build up over several years.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Criconemella parva occurs entirely within the soil environment. As ectoparasites, they remain outside the root tissues, using their specialized stylets to pierce plant cells and extract nutrients. Their population density is highly dependent on soil temperature, moisture levels, and the presence of suitable host roots, with reproduction occurring rapidly under optimal conditions.
Damage and impact. Feeding activity leads to localized tissue damage, including necrosis, root stuntedness, and inhibited root elongation. By disrupting the root's ability to absorb water and essential minerals, the nematodes cause overall plant decline, reduced foliage vigor, and yield loss. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for soil-borne pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, leading to severe root rot.
Protection measures. Managing ring nematodes requires an integrated approach due to their persistence in the soil. Effective control strategies include:
- Planting certified nematode-free nursery stock.
- Utilizing cover crops that possess nematicidal properties to reduce soil populations.
- Implementing soil fumigation before establishing new orchards or vineyards.
- Applying registered nematicides in commercial plantations under heavy infestation.
- Maintaining optimal irrigation and fertilization to help plants tolerate nematode-induced stress.
