Description

Ring nematodes of the genus Criconemoides are specialized ectoparasitic roundworms belonging to the family Criconematidae, order Tylenchida. These nematodes are widely recognized in agriculture for their distinct, ring-like body structure, which protects them and allows them to navigate through soil pores. They are considered significant pests in various perennial crops and woody plants.

The host range for Criconemoides species is extensive, covering a variety of fruit trees like peaches, apples, and cherries, as well as grapevines and small fruits. These nematodes are most commonly found in sandy or light-textured soils. Their ability to survive in diverse conditions makes them a constant threat to long-term plantations and orchards where they can accumulate over several years.

The life cycle of these nematodes is completed in the soil environment. As sedentary ectoparasites, adult females attach themselves to the surface of roots, inserting their elongated stylet into the tissue. They feed on the cortical cells of the roots, causing localized cell damage and metabolic changes in the host plant. This feeding process continues throughout their development stages until reproduction occurs.

The damage caused by ring nematodes is often cumulative. By feeding on the root system, they reduce the efficiency of water and nutrient uptake. Infected plants frequently exhibit symptoms such as stunted growth, yellowing foliage, reduced yield, and increased susceptibility to environmental stressors like drought. Because the damage occurs underground, it is often misdiagnosed as nutrient deficiency or fungal infection.

Effective management and control of Criconemoides require an integrated approach to reduce population density:

  • Regular soil testing to detect nematode populations before planting.
  • Rotation with non-host crops to starve out the nematode population.
  • Incorporation of organic amendments to boost beneficial soil microorganisms.
  • Selection of resistant or tolerant rootstocks for orchards.
  • Application of chemical nematicides or biological control agents when nematode counts exceed economic thresholds.
