Systematic position: The genus Cricula belongs to the family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths) within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical Asia. Several species within this genus are recognized as major pests due to their ability to feed on a wide variety of economically important trees.
Affected crops: Cricula species are polyphagous, meaning they feed on many different plant species. They frequently infest fruit trees such as mango, cashew, avocado, and cinnamon. Additionally, various forest trees serve as hosts, making them a significant concern for both orchard management and agroforestry projects.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of leaves. Larvae, which are the main damaging stage, pass through several instars, increasing their food intake significantly as they mature. Pupation occurs within a tough, silken, often netted cocoon attached to the host plant.
Damage patterns and economic impact: Larval feeding is the primary cause of damage. Younger larvae may skeletonize the leaves, while later instars consume entire leaves, leaving only veins or stems. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which severely stresses the trees, reduces fruit production, and can cause dieback or even plant mortality if the stress is prolonged.
