Description
The soybean bud borer (Crocidosema aporema) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is recognized as a major threat to legumes, particularly in regions where soybean production is intense and climatic conditions favor the rapid reproduction of the moth.
The primary host for this pest is soybean (Glycine max), but it is also known to infest other leguminous plants like alfalfa and clover. The moth’s ability to utilize different hosts ensures its survival in various agricultural landscapes throughout the growing season.
The life cycle of the insect consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths typically lay eggs on the upper leaves or terminal buds. Once the larvae emerge, they immediately begin to burrow into the plant tissue, which protects them from environmental exposure and many contact insecticides.
The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By boring into stems and terminal buds, they interrupt the vascular flow of the plant, causing wilting, stunted growth, and the loss of reproductive structures such as flowers and pods. This feeding behavior often leads to significant yield losses if left unmanaged.
