Cotton bud moth

Crocidosema plebejana, commonly referred to as the cotton bud moth or the mallow moth, is a lepidopteran insect belonging to the family Tortricidae. This species is recognized as a global pest, frequently found in tropical and subtropical climates where it impacts various cultivated plants and wild vegetation.

The primary hosts of this pest include plants within the Malvaceae family. Major agricultural crops such as cotton (Gossypium spp.) are highly susceptible, as well as various ornamental species like Hibiscus, Althaea, and Malva. The larvae specifically target the reproductive parts of the plant, causing direct damage to buds, flowers, and fruit capsules.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the foliage or reproductive structures. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the buds or pods to feed. This boring behavior provides the larvae with protection from environmental factors and contact insecticides, making timing crucial for control.

The economic impact of Crocidosema plebejana is characterized by the destruction of fruit-bearing structures. Infested buds often fail to develop, leading to flower and fruit drop. In cotton production, this results in significant yield loss and degradation of fiber quality. Signs of infestation include larval entrance holes accompanied by frass (excrement) accumulation on the surface of the buds.

Management and control strategies include:

• Implementation of strict sanitation by removing wild mallow hosts from the field vicinity.
• Use of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and time insecticide applications effectively.
• Application of biological control agents, such as egg parasitoids or microbial sprays like B.t. (Bacillus thuringiensis).
• Targeted chemical control using systemic insecticides during the critical periods of larval hatching.
