Cottony cushion scale

Systematic position: Crypticerya flocculosa is a member of the Margarodidae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are closely related to the well-known cottony cushion scale species. They are sap-sucking pests that have gained attention due to their resilience and potential to impact various woody plant species in tropical and subtropical regions.

Host plants and damage: This pest primarily targets citrus trees, various ornamental shrubs, and hardwood plants. Both nymphs and adult females feed on plant tissues, inserting their mouthparts into the phloem to extract sap. Severe infestations cause leaf yellowing, stunting of new growth, blossom drop, and in extreme cases, the eventual death of branches or young plants.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Crypticerya flocculosa is characterized by the production of a fluffy, white, wax-like egg sac (ovisac). Females deposit their eggs within this protective structure. The first-instar nymphs, often called "crawlers," are the primary dispersal stage, moving actively across the plant surfaces to locate suitable feeding sites before settling down to develop further.

Harmfulness: Like other scale insects, this pest excretes large amounts of honeydew as a byproduct of its feeding. This sweet, sticky substance accumulates on leaves and branches, creating a perfect substrate for the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal layer inhibits the plant's ability to photosynthesize, which can severely weaken the host and decrease market value for ornamental growers.

Control measures: Effective management involves a strategic approach:

• Monitoring for the presence of crawlers to time chemical interventions.
• Application of horticultural oils which act by suffocating the pests upon contact.
• Conservation or release of natural predators such as the vedalia beetle (Rodolia cardinalis).
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the total population density.
