Zeteki fluted scale

Taxonomic position: Crypticerya zeteki is a member of the giant scale family (Margarodidae) within the order Hemiptera. This pest is a highly specialized insect that occupies a significant place in the entomology of tropical and subtropical horticulture, demanding strict control measures due to its invasive potential.

Host plants: This scale insect is a polyphagous pest, known for infesting a wide range of woody plants. Its primary hosts include citrus species, avocado, mango, and various ornamental trees. The infestation often concentrates on twigs, branches, and occasionally on the main trunks of the affected host plants.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. Adult females produce characteristic white, waxy ovisacs where they lay their eggs. The crawler stage is the primary vector for dispersal, as these tiny nymphs can be easily carried by wind, birds, or human activity to healthy parts of the orchard or adjacent fields.

Damage symptoms: Damage is caused by the direct extraction of plant phloem sap, which weakens the host, leads to leaf yellowing, and eventually causes premature abscission. Furthermore, the honeydew excreted by the scales serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and significantly reduces the plant's overall vigor and yield.

Control measures: Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Biological control is highly successful, particularly through the introduction of specific predator beetles like Rodolia species. Chemical treatments should be targeted at the crawler stage using systemic insecticides or horticultural oils, which disrupt the waxy protective layers of the scales.
