Drosicha
Drosicha
Description
Drosicha is a genus of insects belonging to the giant scale family (Monophlebidae) within the order Hemiptera. These pests are characterized by their significant size and the substantial damage they cause to woody plants. The genus exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism, where females are large, wingless, and sedentary, often covered with a protective waxy substance, while males are winged and mobile.
The host range of Drosicha is extensive, primarily targeting fruit-bearing trees such as citrus, apples, and pears, as well as various ornamental and forest tree species. Their presence in orchards can lead to massive infestations that not only reduce the quantity and quality of the harvest but also severely weaken the plant structure over time.
The biological cycle involves eggs, nymphs (crawlers), and adults. Females deposit numerous eggs into specialized, fluffy ovisacs, usually found in crevices of tree bark or near the base of the trunk. Once hatched, the mobile crawlers disperse across the plant, searching for tender shoots and leaves to insert their stylets and begin feeding on phloem sap.
The damage caused by Drosicha is primarily due to nutrient depletion and the excretion of honeydew. This sugary substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and branches, interfering with photosynthesis. As a result, infested trees suffer from stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, premature senescence, and in extreme cases, partial or total tree mortality.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for Drosicha include:
- Regular monitoring and mechanical removal of egg masses and adult colonies from bark.
- Strategic application of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler emergence phase.
- Promotion of biological control agents, such as predatory beetles (e.g., Rodolia cardinalis).
- Maintenance of proper orchard sanitation to eliminate potential habitats for overwintering stages.
