The rust-red grain beetle (Cryptolestes galeopsidis) is a notorious stored-product pest belonging to the Cucujidae family, order Coleoptera. Known for its small, flat body, this insect is specifically adapted to infest stored grains and various processed food products, posing a significant challenge to the agricultural and food industries worldwide.

This species primarily targets stored cereals, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to raw grain, it infests milled products such as flour, bran, and various cereal-based animal feeds. It is particularly prevalent in facilities where humidity levels are inadequately controlled, as moisture provides the necessary environment for its biological development.

The biology of Cryptolestes galeopsidis follows a complete metamorphosis cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The flattened shape of the adult beetle allows it to hide deep within structural crevices of grain bins or inside the kernels themselves. Females lay eggs in loose debris or on grain surfaces, and the larvae emerge to feed on the endosperm and germ of the seeds.

The economic damage caused by these beetles is extensive. They consume the nutrient-rich germ of the grain, which completely destroys its viability for planting and reduces its nutritional value. Furthermore, their presence promotes the growth of mold and fungi, leading to grain heating, clumping, and secondary contamination that ruins the quality of the stored goods.

Effective management and protection strategies are essential for warehouse hygiene. Key practices include:
