Description

The gooseberry aphid (Cryptomyzus cynosbati) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized pest that targets specific berry shrubs, often going unnoticed until significant visual symptoms appear on the foliage.

The host range primarily includes gooseberries and red or white currants. These insects inhabit the undersides of leaves, particularly on new growth, where they use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap, causing stunted development of the affected shoots.

The life cycle begins in early spring when larvae hatch from overwintering eggs laid on the host plant's bark. As temperatures rise, the population increases rapidly, with multiple generations occurring throughout the summer, including both wingless and winged individuals that facilitate the spread of the colony.

Damage is characterized by the formation of red or yellow blister-like galls on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, leaves curl downward, their surface area available for photosynthesis decreases, and the overall plant vigor declines, leading to smaller fruit sizes and reduced yields.

  • Cultural control: Pruning and destroying infested shoot tips in early spring.
  • Sanitation: Keeping the area clear of excessive suckers and weeds that can shelter aphids.
  • Biological control: Encouraging beneficial insects like lady beetles and lacewings in the garden.
