Macadamia nut borer

The Cryptophlebia ombrodelta, commonly known as the Macadamia nut borer, is a destructive moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a highly significant economic pest that poses a constant threat to macadamia, lychee, and various other tropical nut and fruit orchards across its range.

The host range of this pest is extensive, encompassing several horticultural crops such as litchi, longan, citrus, and avocado. Larvae are known to bore into the fruit or nuts, where they feed on the kernel. Because they remain protected inside the fruit for the majority of their larval stage, they are particularly difficult to control with conventional pesticide applications.

The life cycle of the Macadamia nut borer typically consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the surface of developing fruit. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the fruit, which often results in premature fruit drop. Depending on environmental conditions, the insect can complete multiple overlapping generations within a single season.

The direct damage involves the destruction of the nut kernel, which renders the fruit unmarketable. Furthermore, the entry holes created by the larvae serve as entry points for pathogens, leading to fungal decay and rot within the orchard. This cumulative damage can cause devastating losses if not managed promptly and effectively.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, such as the use of pheromone traps for monitoring, are essential for determining the timing of insecticide applications. Biological controls, including the release of specific egg parasitoids like Trichogramma species, play a vital role in reducing populations in an environmentally sustainable manner.
