Ctenicera

Description

The genus Ctenicera belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae. In agronomy, this genus is recognized as a significant pest, primarily due to its larvae, known as wireworms, which cause substantial damage to a wide range of agricultural crops across various climatic regions.

Adult beetles typically do not cause economic damage, as they feed on pollen and leaves of wild vegetation. However, the larvae are strictly subterranean, inhabiting the soil layer where they feed on roots, tubers, and seeds, making them difficult to detect until significant plant damage has already occurred.

The life cycle of the pest is lengthy, spanning from 3 to 5 years depending on the species and environmental conditions. The larvae progress through several instars and are highly mobile within the soil profile, moving vertically in response to temperature fluctuations and soil moisture content to ensure survival.

The damage is characterized by the destruction of roots and the boring of tunnels into stems and tubers. This feeding activity leads to uneven crop emergence, stunted growth, and death of young seedlings. Furthermore, the boreholes created by larvae facilitate the entry of soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary rot.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach. Standard practices include deep autumn plowing to bring larvae to the surface, maintaining proper crop rotation to disrupt the pest's cycle, and weed control to eliminate egg-laying sites. Chemical control involves seed treatments with insecticides and the application of granular soil insecticides at the time of planting.
