Copper click beetle

The Copper click beetle (Ctenicera cuprea) is a beetle belonging to the family Elateridae. While the adults are recognizable by their distinct metallic sheen and their ability to flip themselves into the air with an audible "click," it is their larval stage—the wireworm—that is notorious for causing significant economic losses in agriculture.

Wireworms are highly polyphagous and pose a severe threat to a wide range of crops. They frequently infest fields of cereals, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, and various vegetable crops. By feeding on germinating seeds and the root systems of young plants, they significantly reduce plant density and vigor, leading to uneven and sparse crop establishment.

The life cycle of the copper click beetle is complex and typically spans several years, often from 3 to 5 years depending on local climatic conditions. The larvae live entirely underground, moving vertically through the soil profile to find suitable moisture and food sources. Pupation occurs in the soil, and the adult beetles emerge in the spring to mate and lay eggs.

The damage caused by these pests is often underestimated until it is too late. Wireworms consume the interior of seeds or tunnel deep into roots and tubers, which weakens the plants and makes them susceptible to environmental stress. In root crops like potatoes, the physical damage from boring tunnels drastically reduces marketability and storage life due to secondary infections.

A successful integrated pest management (IPM) program against the copper click beetle includes several key strategies:

• Implementation of regular tillage and deep plowing to expose larvae to natural predators and harsh weather.
• Crop rotation to break the life cycle of the pest in infested areas.
• Rigorous weed management, as grasses like couch grass are primary hosts for developing larvae.
• Use of systemic insecticidal seed treatments to provide early-season protection.
• Application of soil-applied granular insecticides at the time of planting for high-risk fields.
