Comb-horned click beetle

The comb-horned click beetle (Ctenicera pectinicornis) is a member of the family Elateridae within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in the larval stage, commonly referred to as wireworms, which inhabit the soil and feed on underground plant structures.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, maize, potatoes, sugar beets, and various vegetable crops. Wireworms are particularly problematic in fields with high soil moisture, often thriving in areas that were previously under perennial grasses or pastures for several years, which provide ideal conditions for egg-laying.

The biological cycle of this click beetle is complex and extended, typically spanning three to five years depending on environmental conditions. Adults emerge in spring to mate, and females subsequently lay their eggs in the soil. The larval stage is entirely subterranean, where they undergo multiple molts, feeding on organic matter and living roots during their long development period.

The damage caused by wireworms is often severe and immediate. They tunnel through roots, bore into young stems, and consume seeds during germination, which prevents uniform crop establishment. The resulting damage weakens the plants, making them susceptible to secondary pathogens, and often leads to significant thinning or complete destruction of the crop stand.

Effective management and control strategies for the comb-horned click beetle include:

• Implementing regular deep fall tillage to expose larvae to natural predators and weather extremes.
• Maintaining proper crop rotation to break the pest's multi-year life cycle.
• Eliminating grassy weeds that serve as hosts and sites for oviposition.

• Applying soil-incorporated insecticides during planting for high-risk crops like potatoes.
