Description

Ctenoplusia agnata is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its wide host range and potential to cause widespread damage to commercial crops.

The larvae, known as loopers, attack various host plants. Common targets include vegetables such as cabbages, tomatoes, peppers, and beans, as well as several ornamental plants and industrial crops like sugar beets and sunflowers. Its polyphagous nature allows it to thrive in both field and greenhouse environments.

The life cycle encompasses egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs on the underside of leaves, and the emerging larvae feed voraciously. After completing their larval development, they pupate, often within a silk cocoon attached to the host plant or in the soil surface layers.

The damage caused is primarily through leaf consumption. Early instars often create small windows or skeletonize the foliage, while later, larger larvae consume entire leaf sections. Severe infestations can defoliate the plant, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields, making the produce unsellable.

Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Cultural control methods include deep ploughing to disrupt pupae and rigorous weed management to remove alternative hosts. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) often incorporates biological controls like Bacillus thuringiensis and selective chemical insecticides applied during the early larval stages.
