Ctenopseustis herana is a species of moth belonging to the Tortricidae family, within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is primarily known as a significant pest in New Zealand horticultural systems. As a member of the leafroller group, it exhibits behaviors common to its taxonomy, specifically the tendency of its larvae to roll leaves and feed within sheltered environments.

This pest targets a variety of crops, including pome fruits like apples and pears, as well as various woody ornamentals and berry bushes. The larvae are generalist feeders, but their impact is most severe when they attack developing fruit. By damaging the surface and deep tissues of the fruit, the pest causes cosmetic defects and allows secondary pathogens to enter the fruit flesh.

The lifecycle of Ctenopseustis herana consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Moths lay eggs on the upper surface of leaves in masses. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately seek shelter, often binding leaves together with silk. They progress through several instars before pupating, often within the same protective leaf structures they have constructed during their feeding phase.

Damage caused by this moth is characterized by skeletonized leaves, stunted shoot growth, and fruit scarring. In commercial orchards, the presence of these larvae can result in significant economic loss due to crop culling. Furthermore, their feeding activity can stress the plant, making it more susceptible to environmental pressures and secondary pest infestations.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include the deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight patterns, which assists in timing insecticide applications. Cultural controls, such as orchard sanitation and the promotion of natural predator populations (parasitoid wasps and spiders), are essential components to suppress the population below economic injury levels.
