Description
Systematically, the genus Curtonotus belongs to the family Carabidae (ground beetles) of the order Coleoptera. While many members of this family are beneficial entomophages, species within this genus exhibit pronounced phytophagy, causing significant damage to agricultural crops. They are typical representatives of field entomofauna that have adapted to feed on the vegetative parts of cultivated grasses.
The main targets of infestation are cereal crops, including winter wheat, rye, and barley. The pest is most active during seed germination and tillering stages, as well as during grain filling, when adults may damage the ears. Under conditions of mass outbreak, ground beetles can destroy crops across large areas.
The biology of the pest is closely linked to seasonal agricultural cycles. The life cycle includes the egg stage, larvae (three instars), pupa, and adult. Overwintering usually occurs in the larval or adult stage within the soil. In spring, as the soil warms, the insects begin active feeding, which lasts until a summer diapause, culminating in egg-laying in the soil.
Damage symptoms include the defoliation of young seedlings, which appear shredded. Larvae inhabit the top layer of the soil, gnawing at roots and stem bases, leading to plant death. In the milk-ripeness stage of the grain, adults consume the endosperm, significantly reducing the thousand-kernel weight and overall yield, while also negatively affecting seed quality.
Protection measures include strict crop rotation to avoid continuous cereal cultivation, which breaks the pest's development cycle. High-quality soil tillage, including deep plowing, is essential to disrupt the larvae's habitat. Chemical control methods involve the use of insecticides during periods of high beetle density, including seed treatment and foliar spraying when the pest population reaches the economic threshold.
