Description

The Cyclops (lat. Cyclops) belongs to the genus of small crustaceans in the subclass Copepoda, family Cyclopidae. While they are a natural part of aquatic ecosystems, their presence in commercial hydroponic or aquaponic setups can lead to significant agricultural challenges.

These pests primarily affect delicate root systems in hydroponic crops. When water from untreated sources is used in recirculating systems, Cyclops can multiply rapidly, clustering around the root zones of seedlings and young plants, causing direct physical irritation and damage.

The life cycle of a Cyclops involves nauplius and copepodite stages, which are highly resilient to standard environmental fluctuations. Their ability to survive in various nutrient-rich solutions makes them difficult to eliminate once a population has established itself within an irrigation system.

The primary damage includes the mechanical erosion of root hair cells, which impairs nutrient uptake. Furthermore, their presence often creates a biofilm that fosters the growth of anaerobic bacteria, leading to root rot and severe plant stress in controlled environment agriculture.

Management and protection measures focus on exclusion and water treatment. Effective strategies include:

  • Multi-stage filtration systems (below 50 microns).
  • UV water sterilization to kill larvae.
  • Periodic flushing and chemical-free sanitation of nutrient reservoirs.
  • Regular monitoring of water quality to detect early colonization.
