The Green Cyclops (lat. Cyclops viridis) is a small freshwater crustacean belonging to the order Cyclopoida and the family Cyclopidae. While it serves as a natural food source in balanced ecosystems, it is often considered a pest in commercial aquaculture and indoor hydroponic setups due to its predatory nature and rapid proliferation.

The primary damage caused by Cyclops viridis is targeted at fish hatcheries. Adult cyclops are predatory organisms that latch onto fish fry and larvae. By feeding on the skin tissue of the larvae, they cause severe mechanical injuries and stress, which frequently leads to secondary infections and mass mortality in early-stage fish populations.

Regarding their biology, these crustaceans possess a highly efficient reproductive strategy. Under favorable temperatures, the life cycle—from egg to nauplius, copepodite, and finally adult—is completed rapidly. Their ability to produce dormant eggs that withstand environmental stress allows them to persist in ponds even after aggressive cleaning or drying periods.

In industrial water systems, their harmfulness extends to infrastructure maintenance. Dense populations can accumulate in filtration systems and irrigation lines, significantly reducing water flow efficiency. This causes systemic issues in hydroponics and aquaculture, leading to increased operational costs for cleaning and system downtime.

Effective protection and control measures include:

  • Installation of fine-mesh filtration systems to prevent the entry of crustaceans into sensitive areas.
  • Annual desiccation and disinfection of pond bottoms to eradicate dormant eggs.
  • Implementation of predatory fish species that feed specifically on zooplankton prior to stocking main populations.
  • Monitoring of water chemical parameters to maintain conditions unfavorable for massive cyclops reproduction.
