Codling moths

The genus Cydia belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. These insects are among the most destructive pests in global pomology, with the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) being the most economically significant species. They are widely distributed in temperate climates, posing a constant challenge to commercial fruit production and home gardens.

These pests primarily target pome and stone fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, plums, and walnuts. The larvae are notorious for boring directly into the developing fruit. By feeding on the flesh and seeds, they cause premature fruit drop and significant cosmetic damage, rendering the produce unacceptable for fresh market sale or long-term storage.

The life cycle of Cydia species involves metamorphosis through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering occurs as mature larvae in silk cocoons, typically hidden under loose bark or in soil crevices. In the spring, the emergence of adults is synchronized with the phenology of host trees, allowing females to deposit eggs near the developing fruitlets.

Damage symptoms are easily identified by the presence of entry or exit holes on the fruit surface, often accompanied by frass (larval excrement) pushed out of the hole. Secondary infections, particularly fungal pathogens, frequently invade these entry points, accelerating fruit rot. Without effective intervention, infestation rates can result in the loss of nearly the entire crop in a single season.

Control strategies for Cydia require an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance. Essential practices include:

• Monitoring adult activity using pheromone traps to time treatments accurately.
• Removing and destroying infested "drop" fruit promptly.
• Utilizing trunk banding (cardboard traps) to capture larvae seeking pupation sites.
• Applying targeted insecticides or biological controls (such as granulovirus) during peak egg-hatching periods.
