Description
The nut fruit moth (Cydia amplana) is a moth species of the family Tortricidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that affects various nut-bearing trees, particularly in Europe and surrounding regions, often causing substantial loss in harvest quality and quantity.
The primary hosts of this pest include hazelnut (Corylus avellana) and sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa). While these are the main crops of economic importance, the moth is also capable of completing its life cycle on oak acorns, which makes it a persistent threat in areas where orchards are situated near oak forests.
The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a mature larva inside a silk cocoon within bark crevices or organic debris on the ground. Adult moths emerge in early summer, and after mating, females deposit eggs on the surface of developing fruit.
The damage is caused exclusively by the larvae, which bore into the nut and feed on the developing kernel. This feeding habit ruins the internal structure of the nut, often leading to premature abscission. Furthermore, the presence of frass (larval waste) inside the shell makes the nuts unsuitable for market and vulnerable to secondary fungal infections.
- Utilize pheromone traps to monitor adult populations and determine optimal timing for pesticide application.
- Practice orchard hygiene by systematically removing and destroying fallen nuts (infested fruit).
- Apply biological control agents, such as egg parasitoids, to reduce population growth.
- Implement bark treatments or cleaning to destroy overwintering sites for mature larvae.
- Apply registered insecticides targeted at newly hatched larvae before they successfully penetrate the nut shell.
