Araucaria moth

Cydia auraucariae

Description

The Araucaria moth (Cydia auraucariae) is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This insect is a significant pest specialized in damaging the reproductive organs of trees within the Araucaria genus. Given the ecological and commercial importance of Araucaria trees, understanding the behavior of this moth is crucial for sustainable forestry and nursery management.

The primary host for this pest is the Araucaria species. The life cycle is specifically synchronized with the development of the cones. The larvae feed on the developing seeds and the inner cone scales, which directly interferes with the tree's natural propagation process. In severe infestations, the moth can destroy a vast majority of the seed crop in a stand.

Regarding its biology, the moth follows a holometabolous cycle. Females typically lay eggs on the surface of young cones. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the tissues, creating galleries. This endophagous (internal feeding) habit provides the larvae with protection from environmental factors and, partially, from predators, making the window for effective chemical intervention quite narrow.

The damage caused by Cydia auraucariae is characterized by premature cone drop, deformation, and reduced seed viability. Resin exudation is often a secondary symptom observed on the exterior of the cone, indicating internal larval activity. Heavily infested cones often fail to release healthy seeds, which is particularly detrimental for commercial seed orchards and conservation efforts.

To control the Araucaria moth, an integrated pest management (IPM) approach is recommended. This includes:

  • Regular field scouting during the cone-filling stage to detect early infestation.
  • Application of systemic insecticides that can penetrate the plant tissue before the larvae seal their galleries.
  • Removing and destroying infested cones to lower the pest pressure for the following season.
  • Encouraging the presence of natural biological control agents like parasitic wasps in the forest ecosystem.
