Description
The spruce resin moth (Cydia coniferana) is a member of the Lepidoptera order and the Tortricidae family. This moth is a specialized pest that primarily targets coniferous trees, often causing significant physiological stress to the host species.
The larvae of this moth feed on the inner bark and cambium layer of Norway spruce and other conifers. By excavating tunnels beneath the bark, the larvae interrupt the flow of nutrients and moisture, which leads to the weakening of the tree, canopy thinning, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or wood-boring beetle attacks.
The life cycle typically spans one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in cocoons hidden within bark crevices or under loose bark scales. In the spring, they pupate, and adult moths emerge in early summer. The females lay eggs near resinous wounds or around branch whorls where the bark is soft enough for the emerging larvae to penetrate.
The most distinctive sign of infestation is the presence of resin flow on the trunk. As the larvae feed, they mix resin with their frass and bore dust, creating a visible mound that accumulates at the site of the injury. These resin masses are reliable indicators used by foresters to assess the degree of infestation in a stand.
