Description
Systematic position: Cydia deshaisiana is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This moth species is globally recognized for the biological phenomenon where its larvae dwell within the seeds of specific shrubs, causing the seeds to move or "jump".
Host plants and distribution: The primary host is the shrub Sebastiania pavoniana, native to regions of Mexico. While not a major threat to agricultural crops, it is a significant species in terms of botanical curiosities and quarantine monitoring due to the trade of "jumping beans".
Biology and life cycle: The female moth oviposits on the developing ovary of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the seed, where it feeds on the internal tissues. The larva constructs a silk lining within the seed cavity, which facilitates the sudden, jerky movements in response to thermal changes or physical vibration.
Nature of damage: The larva consumes the endosperm and embryo of the seed, effectively destroying it. Because the larva remains inside the seed until it reaches the pupal stage and emerges as an adult, the external appearance of the seed remains mostly intact, making detection difficult for non-specialists.
