Description
The beech moth (Cydia fagiglandana) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It specifically targets beech trees (Fagus sylvatica), impacting seed production and natural forest regeneration by destroying the developing nuts during their larval stage.
Adult moths are nocturnal insects with a wingspan of approximately 15-18 mm. While the adults feed on nectar, the larvae are the destructive life stage. After hatching, the larvae bore into the fruit of the beech tree, consuming the nutrient-rich kernel inside. This activity renders the nuts infertile and unsuitable for food storage by forest animals.
The biology of the species follows a univoltine cycle, meaning one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the soil or leaf litter inside protective cocoons. In the spring, they pupate, and adult moths emerge in early summer. The timing of egg-laying is perfectly synchronized with the development of the beech nuts, ensuring that the neonate larvae have immediate access to their host.
In years of high infestation, the beech moth can cause severe damage, destroying a vast majority of the seed crop. This not only threatens the natural regeneration of beech forests but also results in economic losses for commercial seed collection. The presence of boreholes and frass on the nut surface are the primary indicators of a pest infestation.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:
- Sanitary collection and destruction of infested fallen nuts before larvae migrate to the soil.
- Application of bio-rational insecticides (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis) during the peak hatching window.
