Description

The larch cone moth (Cydia illutana) is a member of the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a primary pest in silviculture, specifically targeting the reproductive structures of larch trees (Larix species), which significantly affects natural regeneration and seed production.

The larvae are the destructive stage of this insect. Upon hatching, they bore into the developing cones, feeding on the internal tissues and the seeds. This feeding behavior often causes the cones to become distorted, stop growing, and drop prematurely, resulting in substantial losses for seed collectors.

The lifecycle of Cydia illutana is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. The moth typically has one generation per year. Larvae spend the winter in diapause inside fallen cones or under the bark of the host tree. Pupation occurs in the spring, followed by the emergence of adult moths that mate and lay eggs on young, tender cones.

Damage symptoms include resin flow and larval entry holes visible on the surface of the cones. Infested cones usually show signs of stunted growth or browning long before maturity. In severe infestations, the larva may consume almost all seeds within the cone, rendering them useless for forestry purposes.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for minimizing damage. Cultural practices, such as the removal and destruction of fallen cones before spring, help reduce the overwintering population. In high-value seed orchards, chemical control using targeted insecticides is applied during the early larval stage before they tunnel deep into the cone's core.
