Pecan nut casebearer

The pecan nut casebearer (Cydia ingens), often associated with broader nut-infesting species, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a significant pest primarily affecting pecan orchards. This insect is highly specialized, having evolved to utilize the developing nuts as the primary food source for its larvae.

The damage caused by Cydia ingens typically begins early in the season when the larvae emerge. They bore into the developing nutlets, consuming the internal tissues. A single larva can destroy multiple nuts during its development, leading to cluster shedding and substantial economic losses for orchardists if the infestation is not managed during the critical early stages.

The life cycle consists of multiple generations per season. Adults are small, inconspicuous moths that lay eggs on the tips of the nuts. After hatching, the larvae seek shelter and begin feeding. They overwinter as larvae in hibernacula, which are small protective cases constructed in the crevices of the bark or around dormant buds.

The presence of Cydia ingens is often signaled by the appearance of frass (larval excrement) held together by silken webbing on the outside of the nut. Beyond the direct consumption of the kernel, the infestation exposes the nut to secondary pathogens, rendering the crop unmarketable and susceptible to rot.

Effective management of this pest requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy that focuses on prevention and timely intervention:

• Monitoring flight patterns using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
• Cultural practices such as removing infested nut clusters where possible.
• Encouraging natural predators, including parasitic wasps and predatory beetles.
• Applying selective insecticides that target larvae during the vulnerable post-hatching phase.
• Maintaining orchard sanitation to reduce overwintering sites for the larvae.
