Description

The filbertworm (Cydia latiferreana) is a moth belonging to the family Tortricidae. While its name suggests a preference for hazelnuts (filberts), it is a well-known pest of various tree nuts and is particularly destructive to acorns, playing a significant role in limiting the natural regeneration of oak forests.

This pest mainly targets the fruit of oak trees, though its host range can include hazelnuts and chestnuts. In forest settings, infestations are often severe, leading to significant losses in acorn production. Because the larvae consume the internal tissues of the fruit, the damage is often irreversible for the affected nuts.

The biological cycle of the filbertworm typically spans one year. The insect overwinters as a mature larva in the soil or leaf litter within a protective silk cocoon. Pupation occurs in the spring. Adult moths emerge in early summer to mate and lay eggs directly on the developing fruit, allowing the neonate larvae to burrow inside immediately after hatching.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding inside the nut. They consume the embryo and the internal storage tissues, rendering the seed non-viable. Infested acorns often display small holes and frass on the exterior, and they tend to drop from the tree prematurely, signaling that the internal development has been compromised.

Management strategies focus on reducing the overwintering population. Cultural controls, such as raking and destroying infested nuts that fall prematurely, are essential. In commercial orchards or nursery environments, insecticide applications synchronized with the egg-laying period are used to prevent larval entry into the fruit. Monitoring with pheromone traps is standard practice for timing these applications accurately.
